counting down this old year
12/15/2009
friday and last night, monday been DOING ALOT of good work with dave music wise. seems like our mental block is off. Dec/ Winter months are always good times to be creative. Jen starts training at her job today ( Wooo ) its good for her to have more constant income- I decided to slow my hard work for FP i was trying for a long time really hard to be best employee and now i realized I dont need the added stress. this place is nice source of income but i shouldnt be dependent on it as my Only means of funds. I need to grow and keep moving forward. FP is dicking us around again w/ possibly doing a video for them...but it seems like $650.00 is too much...which is ridiculous. more later...
We got APPROVAL for the FP Video!!!!!!! 2 videos a total of under 10 minutes $700.00!!! $350 for me $350.00 for H.C.B

idea for music video
new gotham scum
i want it show apathy over human emotions... or way of consumerism has destroyed the human soul so what is left is product placement and reaction to our purchasing
i think if we can accurately capture their motions / faces it will be strong enough to keep viewers interested
having the actors going through their daily activities like they are utterly and completely meaningless
humanoid / zombie minded shells of people
we need to find what is a symbol of senseless desensitivized consumer americanism?
and then we amp that up

Being in the business of you – 10 great ways to promote yourself
July 14, 2009 by David Sabat
Whether you are a full-time or part-time DJ, if you really want to get to the next level you have to “go to work” everyday. I don’t mean go to an office or punch a clock, but do something productive towards your DJ career on a daily basis. Here is a list of things you can do to stay active:
1. Being seen
Online: Utilizing FaceBook does help quite a bit. Being seen is part of the process and being active in social networks is important. A great way to do this is leaving positive comments on the pages of your friends, fans, and colleagues. Leave feedback on their photos, videos, too. Let them know publicly how much you appreciate fans or how hot a fellow DJ’s last set was. Be supportive of others and they are more likely to be supportive of you.
In person: Support other’s events by showing up. You don’t have to stay long but show face, shake some hands, hand out some CDs, and smile as much as possible. It’s like running for office so kiss a baby or two while you’re at it.
2. Make a new mix and push it
I always say when gigs are down make a new mix. Then use the web to get the word out about downloading it. Promote the mix heavily. I’m assuming of course that it will be a good mix. It is great to burn it to CD and hand it out too if budget allows for this.
3. Write music reviews
Not all of us are cut out for this but if you feel comfortable with your writing ability review a few new tracks and send them into industry magazines. You never know…they may publish it. This will not only get your name out there a bit but it gives you something to add to your press kit. You can even start your own review blog and promote it. Also send feedback about tracks directly to the artists. They sometimes use a line or two from fellow DJs to promote the track. If they like it they may start sending you demos directly for feedback or reviews.
4. Throw and event
I don’t recommend this for everyone unless you really know what you’re doing. The last thing you want to do is throw an event to get your name out there and have no one show up. Also budget may be a concern here as well. If you can afford it, bring in a big name DJ to play with you. Now don’t do this for the sole purpose of having a big name on the bill with you. Do this because you really want to throw a quality event. People will respect you more for throwing a quality event than they will for adding a big name next to yours and they can tell the difference. There are a lot of benefits to doing this but they will come naturally if your intentions for quality come first. Don’t force it.
5. Get in the studio
For the producing DJs out there you already know that when things are slow you need to get in the lab. I have yet to venture into the world of production myself but I do know the makings of a great track. Please don’t jump in just to put your name on production. We have enough crap coming out every week to sort through. Get into production with the intent on making something with substance and quality. Producing mediocre tracks will not help your career at all. It might be a good idea to make your own edits of tracks your currently play just to get started.
6. Write a “top ten”
Writing a monthly top ten track list and posting it publicly may also get you noticed. I don’t personally do this but it is one of my goals. Others will see the type of music you play by scanning your list regularly and it keeps your name out there in an industry-related nature. Producers might want to see their tracks on your list and may start sending you material.
7. Do a photo shoot
Nothing screams “I’m alive and well” like a great photo shoot. I’m in desperate need of a new shoot myself. New pictures sometimes can present a new image. If they’re hot, promoters will see how to promote you and even publications may take an interest. Once you use a hot new image for the first time on a flyer people will notice.
8. Updating content
Update your website, FaceBook, MySpace or any other web content/profile with your latest gigs, bio, and photos. Many biographies end with current projects that are now 2-3 years old. Also update your media kit with new photos, bio or discography information. If you’ve been in the press, add clippings as well.
9. Notify your fans
Use social networks and e-mailing lists to let your friends and fans know what you’ve been up to or what you’re currently working on. Add up-coming event flyers, links to photo galleries, video or mix downloads. Don’t wait for them to find out accidentally. Make it your responsibility to inform them.
10. Planning
Plan to do something…anything…on a regular basis that will get your name out there consistently. Train your fan base to expect to hear from you. You must be seen or people will forget and move on.

A question I came across was, Do I exist? I believe to find meaning of Human existence is to find a meaning in the suffering in life, only then can one truly understand their own existence - something that came to me from something I thought long ago-

Bart: Why don't you buy it?
Homer: I can't buy that. Only management-type guys with big salaries
like me can afford things like that.

Trent: A lot of it is marketing. MTV is telling you this is what is cool. Listen to what is cool. I think that the whole situation has made music less art-y and put more emphasis on music as a product. If you buy an album today and it has two good songs on it, it's okay. Before, if you bought an album and it had two bad songs on it, well...it's still an okay album. You got your money's worth. I can't tell you how many CDs we get from bands who want to open for us, you've never heard of them so you put it on and the first song is not bad. Then, well, that one sounds like the same song, sounds like that song...with CDs you can instantly hit that little button and skip to the next track. Albums, at least, you had to go to the trouble of moving the needle. With an album you had this big piece of art, something on the inside and the vinyl. You know, it was a cool thing. CDs are ugly little pieces of shit; art's gone. What really made me think about this was discovering a few records I hadn't really listened to, like: Bowie's Low album, or _Hunky Dory_, Iggy Pop stuff I had missed. You take a record like Low, or _Hunky Dory_ where every song, to me, is awesome, different and challenging. I wish I could write one song that is as good as any song on that album. Then you compare it to what is out today. I hate to think in a retro mindset. You know, "the Beatles were the best thing.." Fuck the Beatles, I hated people who were always going on about the fuckin' Beatles. They're dead. They're ugly now. Get them out of my sight. There isn't much coming out, it seems to me, that has much depth. It's based a lot on what the trend of the second is. And I realize that we are dangerously close to that same thing. Whatever.
Eric: Soon there will be soda commercials featuring some studio guy making bad imitations of your music.
Trent: Well, there was a Gatorade commercial. I had a hundred people say "Why did you do that Gatorade commercial?" I was like, "What are you talking about?" I hadn't seen it. I finally got a copy. It was "Down In It". The beat's a little bit different. The singing has got a little bit of dis- tortion, exactly the same kind of thing as my voice. So I looked into how we can sue these fuckheads. I don't want money. I just don't want them using my song. Well, they changed it a little bit. I remember hearing a commercial and I thought, "Joe Jackson, I thought he was cool, and now he's done a fuckin' commercial for something shitty." It was that song, "Stepping Out". Someting almost exactly like that, but it wasn't him singing. I remember in an interview he said, "They approached me to do this commercial, and I said 'absolutely no way'. And they said, 'Well, we're just going to get someone who sounds like you to do it.'" Well, fuck you. And they did it. And everyone in the world thought it was him.
Josh: What are your thoughts on sampling, within the definition of copyright laws and the restrictions therein?
Trent: I think that sound is sound. If somebody sampled a bit of something in an album of mine, that's cool. I don't give a shit about that. I think it's interesting how rap groups piece together things into new sounds. I'm into that. I do think that it's totally out of control now. Asshole major label lawyers are getting in on it, and realizing they can make money by ripping people off. If M.C. Hammer looped "Head Like a Hole" and did a rap over it, it'd piss me off, and I think I should be compensated because it's my song. I think at a certain point there should be some degree of compen- sation. When it's at *that* level. Like some of these assholes: Vanilla Ice, where it's another whole song with someone talking over it. Or Dr. Dre singing Funkadelic. I've used a lot of samples, but I don't tell anyone where I got them. It's not identifiable. I'm not just looping someone else's music. I'm more interested in textures than the novelty off who or what I've appropriated.
Josh: You bury your samples. If they were taken from a song, I would never be able to recognize it.
Trent: I just produced another band, Marilyn Manson, from my label, and they have a bunch of weird obscure samples, like Charles Nelson Reilly from Lidsville, some bizarre little excerpt from one sentence and the lawyers say "Did you get permission to use that?" This is just one of fifty things on the record.
Josh: Where do you draw the line?
Trent: Well, labels now are so afraid to put a record out. There are people at major labels whose job is just to clear samples, to listen for samples and start the whole thing up. So we made a list of all the different samples that were on this thing, from that song that goes (deep voice) "I bring you fire." You know which one I'm talking about, he's got makeup on. I don't remember the name of it. Just "I bring y..." Not even that much, and it's tuned down, but everyone was terrified. Some album came out, it might have been De La Soul, I forget which rap group. They didn't clear a couple samples and got sued like a motherfucker. They had to recall the album, it cost the label millions. So everyone's terrified now. We had to call Charles Nelson Reilly's peole to see if it was okay: "Yeah, but he'd like to have five hundred dollars for that sample." It's like, "Fuck you!" You know? You would never even know that existed.
Josh: It kind of takes away from the spontaneity.
Trent: Exactly!
Eric: So, it's not all right for you to sample Charles Nelson Reilly, but it's okay for some corporation to take your music. Even if you alter Charles Nelson Reilly, you have to pay, but they can alter your stuff and not pay you for it?
Trent: Everything is set up to protect everyone but the artist. You'd be surprised at things that are in record contracts. Who writes up a record contract? The record company. Who is it looking after? Not the artist. We're on the worst label in the world.
Trent: I don't like to talk about song lyrics when I do interviews because it lessens and cheapens someone else's impression of the song. That's happened to me. I read an interview and whoever wrote [this song] is bitching: "All these people think I'm talking about this. I'm talking about blah blah blah. These people are full of shit!" Well, I'm one of those people. I realize that once it is in the store it is other people's domain to interpret. That is what is interesting about this as a medium of communications. Unless it is something I feel really strong about that is being misinterpreted. For instance, I have been accused of misogyny and shit like that. I think, "You're not getting the point." Like "Big Man With a Gun", "Oh, you're advocating..." Should I even have to comment on that?
Josh: About two years ago I read a _Mondo 2000_ interview, where you called industrial music "the misuse of technology". Could you elaborate on that?
Trent: Well, I probably did say that. I don't think I meant it in that context. I think I was describing some elements in what today is called industrial music, whatever that really means, that use technology in different ways than it was designed to be used. From an engineering standpoint; electronic instruments, recording devices, things like that. Being a programmer I find it more interesting to find how these machines can do things they weren't meant to do. Usually that is a lot more rewarding than plugging something in, reading the manual and doing just what you're told and it sounds like a Janet Jackson record.
Josh: I'd like to know how you view your own artwork. Do you see your music as an attempt to confront the chaos of the world we live in, or is it the culmination of it?
Trent: I think...I don't really sit down and analyze my music. But afterwards, I am forced to because I have to answer questions. Then I have to say, "I haven't thought about that". I am not trying to just bitch, or say that the world sucks. I don't see any point in doing that. But I am trying to come to terms with my own head in a world that is chaotic and doesn't make sense. I'm trying to deal with my own thoughts and recycle them into something that I feel better about myself by expressing. And then, I guess that if others can read their own things into. That's a good feeling. If someone says, "I know what you're talking about, I feel the same way." That's the best...You can't get a better compliment than that. And that's when it was worth sitting in that studio, or fighting with our lighting director, or doing interviews every day. That is the best reward. I'm a public servant.

May 26, 2009 Back from D.E.M.F 2009
- interesting time
- back date 5/22 Friday was a kind of chill day, did a little work on some tunes @ daves and packed for DEMF to leave saturday morning. Jeanette and I slept at my house and left around 1030ish to pick up Dave and L, did a final booz run and took out to Detroit. The ride was good, PSN brought the portable DVD player and we watched something about marry and Zoolander which totally helped and ther was minimal traffic so it was a sweet ride- Got to the hotel, Decent room, big :) but bad air circulation and no vent for the showers- but we did have hot water unlike other hotels- the fest was fun Sat night lots of people (didnt see anyone i kne until sunday, but Jeanette saw a girl she remembered from last year)Had a Shit Ton of fun getting all dressed up for the fest, PSN looked SEXI as hell, L had a fun outfit on and dave and I both were sexxxy with our guyliner and all jazzed up :) - partied hardy and then went back to the hotel to change then left to a Richard Devin event that was blah and totally should have gone to Ghostly Intl. 10 Anny event feat. Telefone Tel Aviv. Worked a tune for a few min when we got back to hotel then sleep. 5/24/ 2009
Sunday breakfest was Awesomely needed across the street, went to the fest to lay in the sun for a bit and relax, walked around, and right after saying i havent seen anyone I kno jeanette and I were found Macros and told us and his hotel with a pool where we partied at after the fest. did sum drinkin in ther room, then went to pool around 1230/ 1am and swam from like 8 min before we got kicked out- moved the party back to our subroom in the hotel then everyone went to an after party and Jean and I chilled in the hotel cuz she wasnt up for partying. I worked on sum tunes while she slept and then D and L came back - they were rollie pollies and were all crak'd out on monday so we headed back home and the drive was blah but we all made it back safe and alive.
Gotta say tho Sunday night was a Blast! getting ready, going to the fest, hang'n with marcos - oh and saw Zim! and buttah - makes Demf Complete.
***totally forgot was suppose to play a show for Zelenka's spot at an after party Sat night for DEMF but blew it off- classic

- thoughts i had the other day -
It became apparent to me that tradition was just "mans" invention. Religion is A. a way to help explain what was not understandable, and B. a power of hope. ( i just feel i should mention that i was brought up Catholic and Do believe in God - though was is taught about the idea of God is what i feel could be incorrect due to the general flaw of man. When it the 3 elements is correct as had been taught with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit- but the labels are what is wrong. What if it is more along the line of Mind, Body, and Soul, Soul being and energy, the Body is our capsule, and our Mind which is a link to the 3 and also our channel to "God" I was told once by someone that the greatest gift Humans were given was the power of Choice- What if our Minds have a much greater power then we have thought. What if our minds have the ability to do so much more then? If everything consist of energy and our thoughts are energy and enough brain stimulation from enough people can generate the "birth" or creation of an idea to a real tangible or process/series of events to have a completed product of idea. How has "Man" been able to survive over the elements and from his own kind? I believe his thoughts, his brain activity, brain waves, gave birth to solutions that become reality. What if "GOD" is a an energy that is All. but as energy goes there needs to be a perfect balance. If there imbalance then there are side effects. In a sense, good things happen and bad things happen. I feel that if there ever is overload of good things then the balance is off and large happening of something negative is needed. This can be handled by doing something bad on a smaller scale or vise versa. As far as Prayer goes, as i mentioned earlier, heavy concentration- meditation - mantras- anything that consists of thoughtwaves/ high brain activity will have a Reaction/ a creation. Man created words, words describe what we interpret, but does that make those words true?
